Abstract
Background: Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung parenchyma caused by various microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, as well as non-infectious factors like chemical agents and physical exposure. One severe form of pneumonia is Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP), which occurs in patients using mechanical ventilators in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Common pathogens include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and viruses such as Adenovirus, Rhinovirus, Influenza virus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and Parainfluenza. Objective: This Final Scientific Paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of oral hygiene intervention using chlorhexidine in reducing the risk of VAP infection in ICU patients, as well as to improve patient quality of life by preventing complications. Conclusion: Oral hygiene intervention using chlorhexidine has been proven effective in reducing the risk of VAP infection in ICU patients. The consistent implementation of this intervention supports efforts to prevent nosocomial infections and contributes to improving the quality of intensive nursing care. Keywords: Pneumonia, VAP, ICU, Oral hygiene, Chlorhexidine, Nursing
